How to Make a Digital Leap in the New Year

Making a digital leap takes the bold attitude and high-level aptitude.

Digitalization implies the full-scale improvement in the way the business is conducted and expands the leapfrogging change to the multiple directions. It represents the next stage of business maturity and will improve how the enterprise works and interacts with its ecosystem, with the people at the center of its focus. It is the thorny journey, how to make the digital leap in the New Year?

Developing digital mindsets proactively: Managing change as a business continuum means that it is not sufficient to just control their behaviors manually because you can’t truly manipulate their thinking. To make change sustainable, it becomes much more powerful to change their thinking behind their actions and behaviors. In practice, mind-shift is one of the most challenging parts of Change Management. Digital paradigm shift evolves the radical change which needs to deprogram old mindsets, let go of “the voices from the past,” or the “shadow from the failures,” and reprogram people's minds with new thinking, beliefs, norms, and attitudes. Because the fixed or rigid mind usually won’t allow a person to think beyond a point. There is a mixed bag of positive and negative emotions behind changes. It is important to be energetic, have an open mindset, be reflective rather than reflexive. The digital mindset stimulates positive emotions, which include the openness to new ideas and perspective, the optimism for things getting better, the passion to explore, the creativity to think better ways to do things, or the empathy to understand issues. To lead change effectively, there is a critical mindset that needs to change and that is the mindset of management. They need to have open mind to embrace different viewpoints and they encourage teams to “think bigger boxes,” to work not just within the box, but across the multiple boxes, constantly seek the better way to do things, and approach problems via multifaceted ways, technically, scientifically, philosophically, psychologically, and sociologically.

Going digital systematically: The digital paradigm shift is now spreading rapidly to enable organizations of all shapes and sizes to reinvent themselves. It is not just about applying a couple of new gadgets. From doing digital to going digital and being digital takes a multidisciplinary approach. Going digital in one's business implies first going digital internally and culturally. Digital organizations and systems have the characteristics of nonlinearity, adaptability, unrepeatability, unpredictability, hyperconnectivity, and interdependence. Thus, it’s important to go digital systematically, constantly improve the business and see change as an opportunity while keeping a holistic overview of the business are the core messages of the text. In order to enable systematic macro changes, you need to apply methods and techniques deriving from sociology, psychology, education, anthropology, social sciences, political sciences, statistics, economics, and so on. The state of being digital is to design the institutions and societies to be a well-balanced digital ecosystem with the abundance of energy and sustainable advantages.

Prioritizing business issues skillfully: Digital organizations are always on and over-complex, there are so many things organizations need to spin well simultaneously these days. There are emerging issues coming out on the daily basis, and it sucks up as many resources as it can. And there are always some constraints for businesses to explore the new opportunities or deploy the new ideas. Therefore, the objective assessment and skillful prioritization should be taken place to leverage time and resource, to focus on things really matter to the business. Prioritization brings transparency to the organization, prioritization forces people to be more creative, to come up with better ideas. When people get stuck in the old routine and comfort zone, they barely survive the whirlwind of daily busyness. Prioritization provides a framework for building up a positive emotional climate, fostering positive relationships, and enforcing communication and collaboration. Prioritization enables you to stay focus, continuously try to improve/develop/change everything in a prioritized order as long as it creates a more long-term business advantage and solves critical business challenges.

Digital transformation is like to paint the picture which needs many colors and dot connections; it is also like construct the architecture which requires different shapes or sizes. Making a digital leap takes the bold attitude and high-level aptitude. Being BOLD in digitalization doesn’t mean you go rogue without disciplines; it means to have a thought-out planning, optimized processes, unique business competency, take calculated risks and adapt to the emergent changes with speed.
